Description
Many travelers are resting in a teahouse named Fujimi-chaya (不二見茶屋 - 'Tea House with a Fuji View') . The two ladies and the waitress appear to be talking about the nice view of Mt. Fuji. The two men on the right are resting and smoking Japanese long pipes. What is the man in the left doing with mallet? Since new straw sandals are quite hard, he is making them softer by breaking them in with his mallet.
Yoshida is located along the Tokaido, now Toyohashi in Aichi prefecture. Hokusai drew Fuji in the final image as a view from the teahouse. He depicted each individual in such detail that the viewers can see their feelings.
The sign in the upper right says O-chazuke (お茶ずけ), rice with tea, and Nemoto Yoshida Hokuchi (根元吉田ほくち). 'Hokuchi' is a tinder material used to receive the spark from the flint.
