Description

This is an uncommon scene for a Japanese print - depicting tea picking in a vast plantation. Many people are working together; women are picking and men are carrying the harvested leaves packed in baskets.

In a foreground, a man is coaxing a reluctant horse to cross the bridge over the stream. Near the cottage, another man is changing straw horse shoes. Most of the people appear busy working, while some are resting on long benches. This conveys a heart warming and relaxed mood.

Picking tea leaves was a major economic activity, starting in spring and continuing throughout summer. About two months after the first harvest, the second one begins, followed by a third a few weeks later.

Hokusai's high skill in depicting people in a wide range of activities is fully realized in the image.
