Description

Different from the previous two images in this series, Hokusai depicted many people here. In the distance, Mt. Fuji shows its beautiful appearance. The hill in front of Fuji is Oyama, known as a sacred mountain and a pilgrimage site that was quite popular in the old days.

The two people, a man and a child, in the foreground seem to be on their way to pilgrimage at Oyama. Hokusai also depicted local people such as a man gathering shells in the river with a basket, a farm woman carrying a baby on her back and lunch on her head, a peddler, and other travelers.

This scene depicts daily life in Nakahara at the foot of Mt. Fuji.
