Description

This huge pine tree was also drawn in the "Guide to Famous spots of Edo," a renowned guide book published at the end of the Edo era, and is believed to have actually existed at Ryugan Temple in Aoyama.

The widely stretching branches of the old pine tree are supported by many posts. In the distance, the exaggeratedly steep Mt. Fuji appears decorated by clouds in classical forms.

Here again, Hokusai depicted people's details realistically. At the lower left, the feet and broom of a man sweeping the ground are visible among the posts. At the lower right, a few people are depicted enjoying drinks while seated on cloth; they appear to be already drunk and happily chatting. Along the footpath, a father is seen holding one end of a tenugui (Japanese towel), with his child holding the other end.

I was amazed to see the significant number of round shapes and dots used to depict the pine leaves and nearby bushes.
