Description

Mt. Fuji is seen among pine trees. This is Hodogaya on the Tokaido, and many people are travelling along the row of tall trees.

On the left, the palanquin bearer is drying his sweat while the other is fixing his straw sandal in a squatting posture. I wonder if the lady in the palanquin is sleeping. The man leading the horse appears to admire the view of Fuji, while the man riding is not interested. A Komuso (Zen priest) is walking in the opposite direction.

I encourage you to enjoy Hokusai's remarkable drawing skills by magnifying the image; the face of the man drying his head is humorous, and each person's posture is very realistic.

The family crest of Hoei-do, the publisher, can be seen on the cloth covering the horse's back.
