Description

At the first glance, I felt something odd in this picture. This is a beautifully drawn image; then what is wrong? The two torii, shrine gates, and the nearby people and buildings are viewed from a high vantage point, but yet we can still see Mt. Fuji through the gate. The perspective isn't what modern viewers are expecting ...

Genius Hokusai combined these two incompatible perspectives in the same scene, creating a very attractive image. He depicted each individual so vividly that I almost hear the sound of them talking. Is it his playful idea to position Fuji in the diagonally drawn torii?

In the sea area, atenashi-bokashi, a blurred gradation, is applied here and there, effectively expressing the shallow sea.

This shallow coastline has been landfilled and the area is now completely different.
