Description

This is a view of Enoshima on the Katase coast. In the old days, there was no bridge connecting the mainland and the island, and people had to either rely on boats or carriers, and in both cases, quite expensive fees were charged. Only during the low ebb tide, could people cross freely as shown in the image.

At the entrance of the island, there is a tall stone lantern, and stone steps leading up into the island can be seen. Further up, a three-story pagoda is visible, although it no longer exists. To depict the sandy area, Hokusai used a large number of black specks, as well as white dots for ripples.

It is early spring, and the trees on the island are covered with fresh new leaves. In the distance, Mt. Fuji is still deeply covered with snow.

Overall, this is a very peaceful view of the sea and the island.
