Description

Very bold and astonishing composition; a huge timber is depicted in the middle of the image, with men working on it using large saws. The smoke from the fire takes a zigzag route upward, and Mt. Fuji is visible between the lumber and the supporting legs. While the clouds winding and circling around Fuji seem unnatural, they add to the image's attractiveness.

Hokusai depicted the people in the image very realistically, unlike some of the other objects, Mt. Fuji, the mountains on the right. The man sitting at the lower left corner is carefully sharpening the teeth of the saw. The woman with a child on her back is observing his sharpening work, while the child appears to be looking up at the large timber. The man sitting by the fire appears relaxed and is viewing Fuji. Under the wood, another man is kneeling on a straw mat and working; plenty of sawdust must be falling down, and I worry about his eyes. Finally, the man's posture up on top is so well depicted that we can even feel his power pushing/pulling the saw harder. (By the way, Western saws cut the wood when we push, but Japanese saws work the opposite way; it cuts the wood when we pull.)

Overall, this truly is an interesting masterpiece.
