Description

The original Japanese title of this print is "Minobu-gawa Ura-Fuji," which translates to "Minobu river and the far side of Fuji"; depicting a view of Fuji from the opposite side of the Tokaido.

In Yamanashi Prefecture, there is a famous temple called Minobu-san Kuon-ji, so this would have been a pilgrimage route frequently used by many people back then. The river, brimming with water, is heaving. Along the road we see many people, including horses and a palanquin. Beyond the steep mountains, Mt. Fuji partially reveals itself.

Many gradations are skillfully used in depicting distant mountains, the forest, the black shadows of the river and the sky, all of which add depth to the image. A careful observation reveals even the smallest details such as people’s facial expressions and cloth patterns on the horses, showing that Hokusai didn’t take shortcuts, and created a very attractive image.
