Description

Two huge sailing boats are depicted in the center, with Mt. Fuji visible between the rope and the sail. This view is from Uraga Channel; in this image, many more sails can be seen in the distance to the left of Fuji.

The most striking feature in the image is the curved horizon. We searched for a photo taken from nearly the same place and angle, but the actual horizon appears flat and straight. Then, why did Hokusai draw the horizon this way? Did he try to show his knowledge that the earth is round, or did the line become curved by chance?

In the Edo era, various items such as rice and vegetables were transported to Edo from this area, now in Chiba Prefecture. Since people are seen looking out through the small window of the ship, it is likely that they also carried passengers.
