Description

Five cranes are resting on the ground, while two are flying toward Mt. Fuji in the glowing morning sky. The foot of Mt. Fuji gently slopes, and the morning clouds encroaching from both sides add a mysterious mood to the scene.

By magnifying the image, we can appreciate how Hokusai depicted each crane so carefully; the shape of the feathers, the angle and shape of the curving necks, and the detail of the feet, are all realistically expressed.

In Japan, cranes are appreciated as auspicious birds. As a scene of sunrise also symbolizes good luck, this peaceful image must have been appreciated as a good indication of the future luck.
