Description

Here again, we observe Hokusai's challenge to depict water. In the foreground, a large water mill is vigorously rolling and pouring water, and many people are busy working around it; two men are carrying a heavy load of grain, a woman is seated and washing something in her basket, and another woman is carrying a wooden bucket. Hokusai even included a small child playing with a turtle.

In the far distance, Mt. Fuji towers, as though quietly observing the daily activities of the village folk.

Onden was a village where rice fields were widely spread. The Shibuya river, which supplied abundant water to the fields, now flows underground.

This place is now Harajuku, one of the most fashionable cities in Tokyo and full of tall buildings!
