Description

This place is now Itako City in Ibaraki Prefecture. This lake is Kasumigaura, which is still famous for its magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. Hokusai must have challenged himself to visualize this view in a woodblock print.

Although the original print was made using only Prussian Blue, with variations in darkness, later versions added a few more colors; this print is one such edition.

This scene depicts a winter morning, where the people in the boat have woken up, and one of them is preparing their breakfast by rinsing rice using water from the lake. Given that this lake is blessed with abundant fishery resources, they must have been staying in the boat for fishing.

Hokusai filled almost half of the image with the boat floating in the lake, surrounded by reeds. Despite Mt. Fuji being located quite far away from the area, it appears unusually large in size and looks close. Although this may seem puzzling, Hokusai skillfully created a marvelous image by applying this unique composition.
