Description

This place is now Kanda Surugadai; in the past, many residents were Bushi working for the Edo Shogunate. As this is a hilly area, people were able to appreciate the nice view of Mt. Fuji from here; nowadays, many tall buildings are blocking the view!

Hokusai carefully depicted many details such as tree branches, leaves, and stones using plenty of dots, both small and large.

He also included many different types of people here. Starting from the lower left, there is Samurai and his servants, a merchant holding a fan, a pilgrim, a local working man, and a vendor or farmer carrying vegetables on a shoulder pole. The water behind them appears to be the Kanda River. Three men climbing on the hill at left are also added.

In the distance, partially blocked by a roof, Mt. Fuji is seen mostly covered with snow, with the beautiful sunset light behind it.
