Description

Tagonoura is located directly south of Mt. Fuji, making it the closest coastal area to the mountain, and it was well-known for its picturesque views of the sea.

In the foreground, two huge boats are struggling against the rough waves, while along the coastline, many people are engaged in salt production.

I am surprised to see how much detail Hokusai drew. At the far right, many people can be seen using poles to carry buckets filled with seawater. Moving toward the left, one can observe many individuals spreading out the salty sand by using special tools, presumably accelerating the evaporation of seawater in the sun.

The composition is interesting; Mt. Fuji stands solemnly in the distance, while the large boats dominate the foreground. Sandwiched between them, many people are depicted in a small scale, adding depth to the image.

But just how accurately has Hokusai depicted the sailors? Half of them are pulling their oars, which would send the boat moving backwards, while the members on the opposite side of the boat seem to be standing and pushing ...
