Description

A peaceful and quiet scene featuring two versions of Mt. Fuji; one towering in the center and the other as a reflection. At the foot of the mountain, small villages can be seen. On the lake, there are no ripples, and only one boat with two people on board is depicted.

By now, most viewers must have noticed several puzzled aspects of the image. Why is the reflection of Fuji shifted to the left? Why does the real Fuji have no snow while the reflected one is covered with snow? The Japanese title in the upper left says 'Koshu Misaka.' That area is located quite far from this lake, Kawaguchiko, and such a reflection can't be seen from there.

Many people have challenged these mysteries. After reading their analyses, my conclusion is that Hokusai playfully combined scenes from several different viewpoints.

Whatever the mystery, I would like to enjoy this woodblock print as it is, ignoring such details and imaging myself within the image.
