Description

The Japanese title is "Sanka Haku-u"; "Sanka" means the foot of the mountain, and "Haku-u" means evening shower in summer.

The distinctive feature of this image is the strong contrast between the upper and the lower parts. The peak of Mt. Fuji, still retaining some snow, rises in the beautiful sky, while clouds peacefully float around the mountain. In contrast, the lower area is dark, covered with black clouds, with flashes of lightning visible.

This seems to be an aerial view of the mountain, and it is remarkable that Hokusai could depict such a scene without the experience of being in an airplane.
