Description

Hokusai introduced many unique compositions in this "Thirty Six views of Mt. Fuji" series, and this image presents another astonishing layout: an enormous tree in the center splits the image nearly into equal boring parts, yet the entire image works very well. Beyond the huge tree, beautiful Mt. Fuji is drawn almost to its base, with two dramatic gradations using Prussian Blue and deep brown. Since there is no snow on the mountain, this must be mid-summer, and the clouds floating around and near the peak are depicted rhythmically as though they are decorations on the mountain, adding a pleasant feeling.

In the lower left, a traveler is resting and smoking a pipe, and in the center, a few people are trying to measure the circumference of the tree by spreading their arms.
