Description

During the Edo era, there were very few bridges over the Sumida River, so people relied on boats to cross it. One of those bridges was the Ryogoku Bridge, seen at the left here. At the end of the bridge, Mt. Fuji is depicted with the setting sun behind. The Asakusa area would be off to the right.

Hokusai drew details in the foreground, while the background areas such as the bridge, houses and other boats are all depicted as silhouettes against the sunset. This contrast adds to the overall attractiveness of the print. Although this is a very beautiful scene, many people on the boat seem disinterested; some are busy in conversations or dipping a cloth into the water, while others appear tired after the long day. The interesting point is that we, as viewers, observe this magnificent view from the same angle as the few people on the boat who appreciate the scene.
