Description

The title is Nihonbashi(Nihon bridge) but where is the bridge? Unlike the Nihonbashi in Hiroshige's "53 stations of Tokaido" series, Hokusai did not focus on the bridge itself. Although the bridge is in the foreground with many people crossing it, only a small part of the parapet is shown.

There are so many people attempting to cross the bridge that it appears almost impossible to move forward. On the right, a large two-wheeled wagon is carrying loads to its limit, while many people are shouldering bundles, and one person is even carrying huge beams.

Hokusai skillfully applied perspective in the image. In the distance, near the vanishing point, the Ikkoku Bridge is seen, with Edo castle visible beyond it. On the left, Mt. Fuji, covered with snow, peacefully towers over the town, creating a huge contrast with the bustling lower world.
