Description

Minakuchi was famous for kanpyo (dried gourds), a commonly used preserved food. In the image ladies are busy drying thinly peeled, long strips of gourd.

Hiroshige depicted this peaceful daily activity, a characteristic scene of early spring in the area. Only one traveler is seen: he has taken off his outer clothes and is carrying them tied to a stick. It seems as though he doesn’t show any interest in the ladies and is simply walking toward his destination.
