Description
What jumped into our eyes at the first glance are the simple stove built with stones and the giant kettle. The smoke rising from the fire is very well depicted by using ‘bokashi’ gradation and the ‘karazuri’ blind embossing technique.
Seen on the left is a simple teahouse with a customer sitting and resting there with a pipe. The straw sandals hanging from the roof of the tea house must be for sale because they were essential items for travelers - they easily wore out and needed to be changed frequently during these long journeys.
In the distance, stacks of rice straw are seen, indicating the harvest season - autumn.
The blue green ‘bokashi’ rising from the bottom and from the horizon help to express the perspective of this image. Hiroshige drew people in the foreground in a larger size but much smaller for far away objects such as the horse, person, houses and so on. As the result he has succeeded in expressing the dynamic depth of this place.
