Description

To reach Okitsu station travelers had to cross the fast-flowing Okitsu river, which ran along a steep cliff.

In this image two Sumo wrestlers are crossing the river. The one in the palanquin carried by 4 people looks uneasy; on the contrary the other one proudly sits on the horse's back.

But how about the bearers? For ordinary people in a palanquin two carriers would be enough but for such a big Sumo wrestler - as you see in the image - he is being carried by 4 thinner men. The horse carrying the other wrestler puts its head down and I can almost hear it complaining about why it has to carry such a heavy guy!

Far in the distance, many sailing boats are seen. Despite the uneasiness of the wrestlers, bearers and horses in the foreground, Suruga Bay seems very quiet and peaceful.
