Description
Even though research tells that this area is quite warm and rarely sees snow (or perhaps Hiroshige came here in summer) we would like to appreciate this image as it is.
As the vermillion subtitle ('Night Snow') indicates, this is an evening scene with the houses and trees all deeply covered with thick snow. The snow is so heavy it even builds up on the traveler’s clothing.
The person on the left in blue wears taka geta - high wooden clogs - to protect his feet from deep snow.
When we see this image we almost hear the subtle sounds of steady steps coming from the three people. The gray foot prints marked on the white snow will soon fade out under the falling snow.
