Description
The unusual shaped mountain in the middle of the image is Mt. Koma. In this image Hiroshige exaggerated the shape a little but its appearance reflects the actual mountain. Mount Fuji is seen peeking out from behind.
In the foreground there are three people. The two people on the right are carrying a folded palanquin, and the running man must be a hikyaku (express messenger).
At this point, the Tokaido passes through an area of rice fields. Far away at the foot of the mountain there is a man wrapping his body with a straw mat, suggesting that this is a chilly day.
