Passing through the mountains at Hakone was one of the most difficult parts of the Tokaido. In this image we see a long Daimyo procession passing down the valley.

Hiroshige exaggerated the steepness of the mountains but people did actually have to walk along narrow valleys like the one shown in this image.

The lake on the left is Ashino-ko and Mount Fuji covered with snow stands beautifully in the distance.
