Description
As the subtitle - written in the vermilion mark - shows, this is a scene of desolate winter ‘Fuyu-gare zu’. The rice harvest is finished, and the fields are brown and dry.
Hiroshige drew the fat cedar tree just in the middle of the image, placed a bonfire beside it and arranged people attracted by the heat.
The buildings in the distance would be Hamamatsu station and the tall structure with black roof is probably Hamamatsu castle.
The rising smoke is carefully depicted by delicate gradation - brown at the bottom, blending into gray and then white shown by the embossing technique.
The traveler standing on the right side of the tree seems to be hesitating to get the light from the bonfire …
