Description

Odawara was one of the largest stations in the highway. To reach it - seen far away at the foot of the mountains - people had to cross the Sakawa river. In the Tokugawa era, building bridges over many of the wide rivers was forbidden, and people had to rely on special laborers to help them cross.

Hiroshige drew mountains in very interesting shapes and colors, adding Odawara castle at the foot of the mountains.

To get to the next station - Hakone - people had to cross over the steep Hakone mountain.
