Description

Originally this part of the Tokaido was located much closer to the sea but following difficulties from tsunami and high tides, it was diverted to a location further from the shore.

Along the Tokaido - starting from Edo Nihonbashi - it was normal to see Mt. Fuji on the right side of the road but because of this detour this mountain was seen on the left in this short part of the road, so the area became famous as Hidari Fuji 'Mt. Fuji on the Left', as seen in this view.

The road passed through rice fields with pine trees along both sides. Those trees must have provided the travelers with shade in summer and protection from wind in winter.
