Description
Leaving Mitsuke station, travelers had to cross the deep and wide Tenryu river. After heavy rain this river tended to cause great flood in downstream areas. For this reason it was commonly called Raging River in those days.
This image shows that the river splits into two streams having a sandbank in-between. This resulted in double charges for travelers crossing.
In the foreground a boatman is standing on the boat while the other man is sitting and holding the long pole which will be used to push the boat across the water.
Faraway we see river mist rising and covering the foot of the forest. The trees farther away are blurred in more distant mist. This is a nice contrast with the clearly depicted foreground elements.
