Description

This is one from a group of six prints, based on the Rokkasen (Six Great Poets) of the Heian era (794~1180), chosen by Ki no Tsurayuki, featured in this series by Chobunsai Eishi 鳥文斎栄之.

A lady has come into the room, apparently to talk with the other two, who are relaxing and reading.

Eishi has beautifully depicted each woman's kimono, especially the finely-striped pattern of the standing lady's kimono, and the intricate pattering of the one worn by the reclining lady.

On the right, the blooming plum tree in a bonsai pot indicates that the season is early spring. The stepping stones, presumably leading to the garden, add depth to the image.

There is an error in the print. The sub-title tells us that the poem is by Henjo, but this is incorrect, and the poem is known to be by Ono no Komachi. We wonder what might have happened? Was there a mistake by Eishi or the publisher?

The poem is about the dream of her lover, suggesting that she would not have awakened if she had known it was a dream.
