Description

This is a view from Fujimigahara in present-day Aichi Prefecture. Anyone seeing this image for the first time would be astonished by its bold and unique composition. A craftsman is working in a huge barrel (Oke), through which, the triangular shape of Mt. Fuji is visible. Hokusai has connected the foreground and distant parts of the image through the use of a field made up of various crossed lines. He also employed different colors for the sky: dark blue with gradation for the highest area, light blue for the lower area, and orange near the mountain and forest. All of these elements add depth and breadth to the image.
