Description

This is a scene from one of the most popular Kabuki plays, 'Shibaraku.' Many artists in the Edo era challenged this famous scene, and Shunsho, the artist of this image, drew several.

The white pattern on the kimono is the crest of the Danjuro family - it represents three nested sake cups of the old square wooden fashion. His kimono colour - the brick red tone - is also strongly associated with that family, to the extent that no other kabuki actor could possibly wear clothes using this tone.
