Description

Irises bloom in a pond or river in the background as a beautiful woman in a state of undress chases fireflies. A little cage in front of her shows us that she is hoping to catch a few of the insects.

Bokashi gradation has been used in the background of the print to great effect, and the hairline of the woman has been finely carved.

Torii Kiyomitsu depicted the young lady, presumably in the midst of changing her clothes, so vividly and realistically that the humorous scene will bring a smile to the viewer's face.

The poem reads, "Yami no Yoru Akari mo iranu Hotaru-gari" (やみのよる あかりもいらぬ ほたるかり), which can be paraphrased as "In the dark night, light is not needed for firefly catching."
