Description

Two men gaze in amazement at the view of Mt. Fuji before them. One of them has been cleaning and has just removed the fusuma (sliding window), revealing the scenic picture. The upper and lower sections of the wall around the view make it look like a hanging scroll, probably giving this piece its name - Kakemono no Hottan ("The First Hanging Scroll").

This is a colourised print taken from a page of the famous book Fugaku Hyakkei ("100 Views of Mt. Fuji"), designed by the illustrious Katsushika Hokusai and published in Edo in 1835. This particular image is from volume two of the book. The book was not printed in colour, and the original version of this print was therefore designed in grayscale. This later print has been colourised, probably to appeal more to customers.
