Description

We also have the original wrapper for this print. This one was produced by the 古吾妻錦繪保存会出版 (Ko azuma nishiki-e hozon kai), and the wrapper tells us that this was issue #36 of its particular series.

This print was listed as: 若妻二美人 (Two Beautiful Young Housewives), brush of Torii Kiyohiro.

The poem is read as Ko wo motanu Uchi ga Nyōbo no Hatsuzakura 子を持たぬ 内が 女房の 初桜, which can be paraphrased as "Young wives before having children are as fresh as newly blooming cherry blossoms." It would seem that newly-married women, who have not yet had children, still have plenty of free time to take care of themselves.
