Description
One of only seven known prints by Kabukidō Enkyō, this print depicts Nakamura Nakazō II as Matsuōmaru from the play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami. Nakazō strikes a fearsome pose, made all the more striking with his kumadori makeup. It is an ōkubi yakusha-e, a bust portrait of a kabuki actor, like Kabukidō's other six known works. Little is known of Kabukidō except that he may have been a student of Sharaku. The original print was probably produced in 1796. It seems like a little kimedashi blind embossing may have been used on the nose of the actor to make it more prominent.
