Description
This print of actors Sanogawa Ichimatsu (right) and Nakamura Shotarō (left) may be based on this benizuri-e print by Kiyomasu perhaps of the kabuki play Hatsu Tora Kurama Genji performed at the Ichimura theatre in 1749. The two characters appear to be in conversation, one looking up from reading a letter, and their kimono are very elaborate and eye-catching.
The black-and-white square pattern, known as Ichimatsu Moyō 市松模様, became widely popular due to this famous actor's use of it in his costumes.
The artist is Torii Kiyonobu 鳥居清信 (1664–1729). While the original version was likely a simpler benizuri-e, this reproduction was made as a nishiki-e during the early years of the Taishō era (1913–1914).
