Description

This scene depicts a New year celebration at a courtesan's house. In the lower left, a portable clay stove is used to bake Japanese rice cakes, one of the typical foods eaten during the New Year season.

It is amazing how each lady's kimono and obi sash patterns are extremely fine, delicately carved and printed. By enlarging the image, we can clearly see the embossing patterns. All the patterns are very beautiful.

The artist is Katsukawa Shuncho, whose information is not readily available nowadays, but he is known as one of Shunsho's disciples.
