Description

A traveller takes a rest at the base of a precipice while another man walks inside a cave (or it is a waterfall?) with a bucket to collect some water. Two more travellers approach the rest spot, doubtlessly looking forward to resting their feet. The print is titled Tanima no Fuji ("Fuji in a Valley").

This is a colourised print taken from a page of the famous book Fugaku Hyakkei ("100 Views of Mt. Fuji"), designed by the illustrious Katsushika Hokusai and published in Edo in 1835. This particular image is from volume two of the book. The book was not printed in colour, and the original version of this print was therefore designed in grayscale. This later print has been colourised, probably to appeal more to customers.
