Description

A monkey trainer, his monkey, and three young women cross the Sumida River in a boat in this print by Masanobu.

The women play the shamisen and drum while another woman is paddling. The small monkey, wearing a little hat and jacket, sits right at the front of the boat tied by a string.

In the Edo era, some people made their living as entertainers on boats; the group depicted here appears to be such kind of people.

In the far distance, a transportation boat, some villagers, and a torii gate are depicted, providing a big contrast to the colorful and gorgeous entertainers.
