Description
This is one from a group of six prints, based on the Rokkasen (Six Great Poets) of the Heian era (794~1180), chosen by Ki no Tsurayuki, featured in this series by Chobunsai Eishi 鳥文斎栄之.
The man and the seated woman exchange glances, while the woman standing behind them gazes at the man. Could the rolled letter she holds perhaps be a love letter to (or from?) him?
The overall tone of this series does not use any bright colors but rather muted shades, which makes them very attractive.
The accompanying poem, by Ariwara no Narihira, expresses the sad feeling of broken heart: although I have not changed, it feels as if the moon and spring appear to have changed.
