Description

This is one from a group of six prints, based on the Rokkasen (Six Great Poets) of the Heian era (794~1180), chosen by Ki no Tsurayuki, featured in this series by Chobunsai Eishi 鳥文斎栄之.

While two ladies relax, the woman at the teahouse is serving tea. The willow tree, grasses and the hems of ladies' kimono indicate a windy day.

The two ladies must have walked a long way; one lady seated on the bench wipes her face and taking off one side of her kimono, while the other lady fans herself. The chrysanthemums on the left indicate the season is autumn.

The accompanying poem, by Bunya no Yasuhide, reflects on the connection between the autumn wind's destructive force (荒らす , "arasu") and the word storm (嵐, "arashi") with the similarity in sound.

吹くからに秋の草木のしをるれば むべ山風を嵐といふらむ
