Description

This is one from a group of six prints, based on the Rokkasen (Six Great Poets) of the Heian era (794~1180), chosen by Ki no Tsurayuki, featured in this series by Chobunsai Eishi 鳥文斎栄之.

In a gorgeous garden all surrounded by a high fence, three women appreciate cherry blossoms blooming in a pot, bonsai. Since no sign of spring is depicted such as any kinds of flowers, the plant must have been artificially arranged to bloom earlier than usual. (Some resources suggest placing the pot inside the house in early March so that the tree is fooled as spring has come.)

The accompanying poem, by Ono no Komachi, laments men's unfaithfulness. The direct translation of the poem would be something like "While we can see with our own eyes how ordinary flowers gradually fade, the blossoms of love that bloom in a person's heart wither away before we even realize it."
