Description

This is one from a group of six prints, based on the Rokkasen (Six Great Poets) of the Heian era (794~1180), chosen by Ki no Tsurayuki, featured in this series by Chobunsai Eishi 鳥文斎栄之.

Three ladies are relaxing in a tatami room, enjoying the beautiful view with all the sliding doors opened wide.

The standing lady's haori (over-garment) and kimono collar have a deep, rich black, which are very nicely done. In the foreground, a hibachi (Japanese brazier) is placed, and the lady in blue kimono, likely a servant, is tending to it using a small bellows.

In the distance, a serene and tranquil scene is spread: a boat with a man, a temple nestled among trees, and a flock of descending geese.

The accompanying poem, by Otomo no Kuronushi, expresses the feeling of unrequited love, comparing a crying woman to the geese.
