Description

This is from the series titled "Fuzoku Azuma Nishiki 風俗東之錦" by Torii Kiyonaga 鳥居清長. This depicts the Japanese dance titled Shiokumi, where the participants are shown extracting salt from sea water. In this image, two women are shown carrying buckets of sea water suspended from shoulder poles. Kiyonaga is well known for drawing slender and elongated women, frequently even as much as eight heads tall, far more than the more realistic six heads. In this image, he entertains viewers not only with the beautiful ladies but also with attractive kimono patterns such as birds, waves and flowers.
