Description

Two people, a man and a woman, are playing a Japanese flute together under a plum tree. This seemingly difficult act is understood when we recognize this image as a parody of Chinese historical figures, the Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei.

The plum blossoms are in full bloom, likely filling the air with their fragrance. This scene is described in the poem "Ume ga Ka ni nazumu Neiro no Tekuda kana," which depicts the harmony of music and fragrance.

The artist, Torii Kiyohiro (鳥居清廣), originally created this work as a Benizuri-e (紅摺絵), with color areas hand-painted. This version is of course fully carved and printed.

The kimono patterns worn by both figures are unusual and attractive.
