Description

This print is titled "Tachibana (橘)" from the series "Tose Yuri Bijin Awase (当世遊里美人合), Beautiful Women of the Pleasure Quarter."

Kiyonaga depicted many beautiful women working in various red-light districts, some of which were more casual than the Yoshiwara.

In this image, he portrayed each person and their postures with great naturalism and realism. Technically, the delicate carving of the hairlines, the working woman's kimono patterns, and the edges of the standing woman's obi sash are so finely depicted that they appear completely natural.

At that time, many women in the common class were working full-time, and Kiyonaga's focus in this print was on such women.
