Description

The artist is Kitao Masanobu 北尾正演 (1761~1816), who is also well-known as gisaku-sha 戯作者, an author of popular stories, under the name Santo-kyoden. He wrote many stories, which were very popular, mostly illustrating them himself.

In the image, two beautiful ladies in gorgeous kimono are relaxing at the veranda. The black long box between the ladies appears to be a shamisen case.

As you might have noticed, the hands of the ladies are very small. According to the historical standards of beauty, small hands and small mouths were considered attractive during that time.
