Description

This is from the series describing women of three ranks - upper, middle and lower. As you have already guessed, this one shows lower rank.

It appears to be a hot summer scene. Shinobu, a type of squirrels foot fern appreciated in summer, is seen hanging behind the bamboo scroll. The seated woman, holding a fan, is lifting one sleeve up to her shoulder and even opening her chest. The standing lady, dressed properly in her kimono, including the undergarment, seems to be scolding the other lady's bad manners.

Although Utamaro depicted two contrasting ladies very well, we wonder what would he think if he had the chance to see young ladies in modern society; wearing sleeveless shirts, short pants, and trimming their hair very short.

I heard that very well-trained people in high society used to say, "You wouldn't feel hot if you try not to feel that way." Many people in those days must have suffered from heat rash!
